<software, security> (Capitalised) Microsoft's {proxy server} and proxy gateway, designed to provide extensible firewall and network security. Proxy Server is part of BackOffice. (1999-09-17)
HTTP proxy server
<World-Wide Web> A proxy server for HTTP requests. Typically an HTTP proxy or "web proxy" accepts HTTP requests containing URLs with a special prefix. The proxy removes the prefix and looks for the resulting URL in its local cache (if it is a caching proxy). If found, it returns the document immediately, otherwise it fetches it from the remote server, saves a copy in its cache and returns it to the requester. The cache will usually have an expiry algorithm which flushes documents according to their age, size and access history. The purpose is to reduce the amount of data flowing over the proxy's Internet connection and to speed up clients' access to frequently requested pages, e.g. at an ISP or on a large company's firewall. The proxy may also reject requests where the URL or content matches certain conditions. The Apache HTTP server can be configured to act as a proxy server. Another popular software proxy is Squid. Proxy server

In computer networking, a proxy server is a server application that acts as an intermediary between a client requesting a resource and the server providing that resource.

Instead of connecting directly to a server that can fulfill a request for a resource, such as a file or web page, the client directs the request to the proxy server, which evaluates the request and performs the required network transactions. This serves as a method to simplify or control the complexity of the request, or provide additional benefits such as load balancing, privacy, or security. Proxies were devised to add structure and encapsulation to distributed systems. A proxy server thus functions on behalf of the client when requesting service, potentially masking the true origin of the request to the resource server.

Examples of use of proxy server
1. OK The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
2. Internet access across most of Dubai is restricted by a proxy server.
3. However, the proxy server that prevents access to selected sites does not extend to Emaar properties or to Internet City and Media City.
4. They also could not access Falun Gong sites without going through a proxy server and said the overall speed of the Internet at the press center seemed to be way below par.
5. "I published a paper [in June 2005] on how the CleanFeed system works and how a clever person ... could use software to fire off thousands of potential web addresses at the system, then see if any had been routed back through a proxy server, which is how the system operates for sites on the list," Clayton says.
